No, and that is the whole point. Traditional balayage is painted starting below the root, which is exactly why the grow-out stays soft. There is no sharp line to chase, because the lightening never started at your scalp.

Why balayage skips the root on purpose

Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair. Your colorist starts below the root and sweeps down, leaving more lightness through the mid-lengths and ends.

That gap at the root is not a shortcut or an oversight. It is the design. Because the lightening never reaches the scalp, there is no hard regrowth band forming a centimetre at a time. Your natural color at the root simply stays where it is, and the transition into the lighter hair is gradual.

It is why balayage is the lower-maintenance way to be lighter.

How far below the root does balayage start?

There is no fixed distance. It is placed differently on every head, and differently in different places on the same head.

How far down the paint begins depends on the look you are after. In practice it often sits very close to the scalp around the face, where brightness does the most work, and further away through the back, where softness and grow-out matter more.

That is the craft in it, and it is why balayage cannot be reduced to a formula.

It also has a practical consequence worth knowing before you book: because the front sits closer to the scalp, that is where new growth shows first.

Balayage vs highlights: where each one starts

This is the real difference, and it is not the one most people expect. It is not about lightness. It is about where the lightening begins.

Balayage Foil highlights
Where it starts Below the root At the scalp
How it is applied Painted freehand on the surface Sectioned and wrapped in foil
Grow-out Gradual — no line A regrowth line forms
Typical upkeep Longer between visits More frequent
Brightness at the root Soft Bright

Neither is better. They answer different questions. If you want brightness right at the scalp, highlights do that and balayage does not. If you want to stretch time between appointments, balayage is built for it.

What the grow-out actually looks like

This is the difference, and it is easier to see than to describe.

Foil highlights growing out at Eutopia Salon in Baton Rouge, LA
Foil highlights, growing out. The natural color has returned as a band at the root, because the lightening started at the scalp. It only widens from here.
Balayage with a root smudge six weeks after the appointment at Eutopia Salon in Baton Rouge, LA
Balayage with a root smudge, six weeks on. No band. The depth at the root is not regrowth — it is the design.

The highlight has a deadline built into it. The balayage does not.

How close to the root can balayage go?

Closer than most people think — but never all the way.

A skilled colorist can bring the paint quite high while still leaving a soft edge rather than a hard start. That is the craft in it: the closer to the root you go, the more brightness you get, and the more carefully the transition has to be blended so it still grows out softly.

Push it all the way to the scalp and it stops being balayage. It becomes a highlight, with a highlight’s maintenance.

What is a “rooted balayage”?

A rooted balayage is placed further away from the scalp than a standard balayage, and it generally includes a root smudge as well.

So it is two deliberate choices, not one: the lightening starts lower down, and a root smudge — a toner applied at the root and feathered down — blurs the transition on top of that.

The result is the softest grow-out of any version of balayage, and the most natural depth at the root. If low maintenance is the priority, this is the version to ask for.

What if you want your roots lighter?

Then balayage on its own is not the service. You want one of:

  • A full highlight — foils taken to the scalp, bright at the root, with a regrowth line to maintain
  • An all-over lightening — every strand lifted, including the root
  • Balayage plus a partial highlight — brightness around the face and part, softness elsewhere

All of them need more frequent upkeep than balayage alone. That is the trade: brightness at the root costs you time between appointments.

How long does balayage last before it needs redoing?

A full balayage lasts three to six months. How long depends on how fresh you like to look, not on the color failing.

There is a middle option most people do not know about. Because the paint sits closest to the scalp around the face, that is where growth shows first — so the front can be touched up on its own during a toner refresh, without redoing the whole head.

That gives you two rhythms rather than one:

  • Every six to eight weeks — a toner refresh, with the front touched up if it needs it
  • Every three to six months — the full balayage again

Compare that with a foil highlight, where the regrowth line arrives on its own schedule and sets your appointment for you.

What does it cost, and how long does it take?

Balayage starts at $165. Nearly every appointment adds a toner at $50 and a style at $50 — about $265. With a haircut instead of a style it is about $280.

Those are the lowest prices, not averages. Hair is variable — length, density, how much lightening the look needs, and how much product it takes all move the number, and there is a product cost fee on top. Your actual price is worked out with you at the consultation, before anything starts. You can see the full color price list for everything else.

Plan about four hours in the chair, a little longer if you have a lot of hair or it is especially long.

Who balayage is right for — and who it is not

It is right for you if

  • You want to be lighter without a regrowth line to chase
  • You want longer between appointments
  • You like depth at the root and brightness through the ends
  • You are growing out an old highlight and want the line to disappear

It is probably not for you if

  • You want brightness right at the scalp — you want highlights
  • You want every strand lifted — you want an all-over lightening
  • You want zero root depth at all

Common questions

Does balayage cover your roots?

No. Balayage is painted starting below the root, so your natural color stays at the scalp. That is what makes the grow-out soft and the maintenance lower than foil highlights.

Can balayage be done close to the roots?

Yes. There is no fixed distance — it is placed to suit the look, often very close to the scalp around the face and further away through the back. It never starts at the scalp itself; that would be a highlight.

How long does balayage last?

A full balayage lasts three to six months. The front, which sits closest to the scalp, can be touched up on its own at a six-to-eight-week toner refresh rather than redoing the whole head.

What is a rooted balayage?

A balayage placed further away from the scalp than usual, generally finished with a root smudge as well. It gives the softest grow-out and the most natural depth at the root.

Will balayage cover my gray?

No. Balayage lightens; it does not deposit pigment over gray. Gray coverage and gray blending are different services.

I loved this place and will keep going. I had Molly as my stylists and I got a blowout wash and cut for a really good price. I worry a lot about getting my hair cut because I get a wolf cut which a lot of people have trouble doing but they were really experience and nice and did a great job.

I love this place down! To be honest, it is definitely pricy, however the hospitality and work is worth it. Kenya is my girlllll!!! And honestly you can’t go wrong with anyone that works there, they know what they’re doing! I went from black virgin hair to this beautiful blonde. I was beyond scared to bleach my hair, but now I trust Kenya with my life. She knows how to work with bleaching dark, thick hair without damaging it. LOVE EUTOPIA!
